The Varisty Team concluded its season on Saturday, October 24.  The Varsity Team won their first game 17-7 against Knoch, but lost their second game 7-5 against Shaler.  It was a fun day for the girls and the parents saw a great game.

Thanks to everyone that came out to the games to cheer the girls on.  Also, a big thanks to Fox Chapel/Aspinwall for hosting the games.  It took a lot of work to get the fields ready!

Subject: Congratulations to Rick Bernardo and West Allegheny Players

First of all, congratulations to Rick Bernardo and West Allegheny Players for winning the 2009 Varsity Slow Pitch Championship.  Interestingly, this was their first year in the league - quite an accomplishment.  They ended the regular season 5-5 and then beat North Hills in the quarter final game of the playoffs.  In the semi-final game, they were losing 3-1 to Shaler and down to their last out of the game before they rallied for eight (8) runs and won the game.

The championship game continued a tradition of exciting championship games with a thrilling ending.  North Allegheny was leading 6-4 going into the 7th inning when West Allegheny pounded home five runs to take a 9-6 lead in the top of the 7th inning.  North Allegheny came back strong and scored two runs in the bottom of the 7th inning.  West Allegheny secured the win with a phenomenal play at the plate for the final out of the game.

The history of our championship games includes:
1st Year: North Allegheny beating Penn Trafford in extra innings in quarter final game, North Allegheny went on to beat Seneca Valley in the Championship game.
2nd Year: Fox Chapel beating Shaler in extra innings.
3rd Year: North Allegheny beating Seneca Valley, with the winning run crossing the plate in the bottom of the 7th inning.
This 4th year is equally exciting and impressive.

The playoffs could not have happened if it were not for a lot of help from several people.  Frank Byers, Leo Cannon, and Jim Schindler joined me Saturday morning to help get the field ready after a long bout of a lot of rain.  Thanks to the three of them, as well as others who pitched in to help when they came to the games (including Ed Vesley).  Without the help of all these people, our championship games would have been delayed.  Be sure to thank all them for all they did.

Congratulations to all the teams that participated in our 4th successful Varsity Slow Pitch Season.  The nine teams this year represented Bethel Park, Fox Chapel, Knoch, North Allegheny, North Hills, Peters, Seneca Valley, Shaler, and West Allegheny.  I have heard from several people who saw these games for the first time this year about how exciting these games are and how impressive it is to see the girls playing at such a high level.  Congratulations to all the coaches.

Finally, please plan to attend our winter meeting.  It is currently scheduled for the evening of January 31, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. at the Aspinwall Borough Building.  (That Sunday is the Sunday between the National Football League Conference Championships - January 24 - and the Superbowl - February 7.)  I will send another reminder of this meeting, but I wanted to get this out to everyone now so that you can put it in your schedules.  Add it to your schedule now so that you can plan on being there.  If you have matters you want to discuss for next year (and several people have already made some comments for agenda items), please email them to me.  We need everyone who was playing this fall as well as everyone who plans on playing next fall (or is considering the possibility, and I understand there are several new possible teams for next year) to come to the winter meeting.

Have a great off season and holiday season.  See everyone January 31.
